Fire on Tuesday gutted a five-storeyed building housing different businesses at Balogun market, Lagos Island.

The fire started in the early hours of Tuesday.

DAILY POST reports that fire servicemen are currently on the ground, making frantic effort to put out the inferno.

As at the time of filing this report, the cause of the outbreak cannot be ascertained by our reporter.

In a video retrieved by DAILY POST, shop owners were seen throwing their goods down from the unaffected parts of the building as others scampered for safety.

Fire has gutted a shopping complex on Martin Street on the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.

The PUNCH learnt that men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and Lagos State Fire Service have been deployed to put out the inferno.

Many traders, our correspondent learnt, had been struggling to salvage some of their goods from the burning building.

The cause of the fire and the extent of damage had yet to be ascertained as of press time.

The spokespersons for LASEMA and the fire service, Nosa Okubor, and Adeleke Ashimi, respectively, confirmed the incident.

However, Ashimi added that another complex on Dosumu Street, about 500 meters from Martin Street, was also on fire.

“Our men are on their way there as well. We don’t know the extent of the fire yet,” she added.

A five-storey building that serves as a shopping plaza at Balogun market was gutted by fire in the early hours of Tuesday.

The fire started at a section on the fifth floor of the building. Efforts were ongoing to quench the fire at the time of this report.

The fire occurred at the Mandiillas axis of the popular Balogun market.

Nosa Okunbor, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, said officials of LASEMA have been deployed to the scene and other responders are on ground to put out the fire.

He added that security officials, traffic officials, Lagos Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and other agencies are also present.

The cause of the fire and the number of shops affected was yet to be ascertained.

Some buildings inside Balogun market, located on Lagos Island were on Tuesday gutted by fire.

The fire which started in the morning created panic in the market with many witnesses sharing videos on social media, showing fire billowing from a building in the crowded market.

Some traders salvaged their goods while others lamented the havoc wreaked by the fire.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage had yet to be ascertained with emergency workers joining traders to help bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Osanyintolu, has visited the scene.

In a chat with reporters, he said efforts were in top gear to contain the inferno with an assurance that the fire-fighters would put out the fire before the close of business.
